Take the first step to the right start at South London Dance Studios . . .

Our aim is to give children and adults of all ages and abilities the opportunity, to learn and enjoy a wide range of dance styles, including ballet, tap, modern, national, jazz and street dance. Your aim might be to become a professional dancer one day, or simply to keep fit and have fun. Whatever your dreams or aspirations, we have the right class(es) for you. Our teachers are ex-performers and / or are qualified by the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance (ISTD).

 

Melody Movement:

Melody Movement classes at SLDS introduce children from 18 months to music and natural movement.  Toddlers attend classes with their parent / carer and go on adventures with ‘Melody Bear’ and the teacher.  Each lesson, ‘Melody’ follows a new theme allowing the children to discover different aspects of natural movement.

Parents / carers participate fully in Melody Movement classes, encouraging their child to develop new physical skills, respond to the music / teacher and become more aware of others and the surrounding space.

Children should bring with them a teddy bear / doll with which to dance.  This should not be their very favourite toy or comforter as there will be moments in the class when the toy will need to be left alone!

 

Nursery Dance:

Our Nursery children’s dance classes give children from 2 1/2 to 3 years a fun introduction to dance.  As this may be the child’s first experience of a structured learning environment, we make sure that our classes combine physical effort and mental concentration with fun games and free expressive movement.  Our teachers use stories, rhymes and songs that capture the child’s attention and imagination, and which also help the child’s language acquisition. 

 

Preparatory Dance & Tap:

Children age 3 to 4 years can build on the skills they learned in Nursery dance by moving into our Preparatory classes. We encourage children to develop a sense of performance and a pleasant quality of movement, and they learn to dance with direction and make formations as a group. 

Children start to understand the importance of precision in dance, especially regarding musical timing and when putting two or more movements together. 

Stories from famous ballets such as Swan Lake are used to engage the children and structure the classes.

Preparatory dance & tap classes also include an introduction to tap dancing. Children develop their sense of rhythm and start to learn the skills and vocabulary they need for their first tap examination.

 

Junior Funky Moves:

Our Junior Funky Moves class gives boys rising 5 to 7 years the chance to learn current commercial dance styles to up to date music in a lively and fun environment. Boys improve their ability to learn new routines quickly and also develop their strength and flexibility.
