Ice Skating at the Natural History Museum

You know it’s officially Christmastime in the capital when the Natural History Museum opens its ice rink.

Set in front of one of London’s grandest Victorian buildings, against a backdrop of fairy-lit trees and centring on a 35-foot Christmas tree bedecked with Swarovski crystal baubles, it’s one of the most atmospheric places to fall over in the city. For the less-steady skaters afraid of doing exactly that, the rink has a colony of helpful penguins to lean on as you glide around the ice. If it gets too chilly, the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition is showing inside.
