Uppingham Summer School - Rugby Sevens

Uppingham School offers a number of summer courses ranging from music to creative arts and drama. However, it is the sports week the school offers that has become the flagship summer course for little tykes looking to start their future England careers. Exciting and competitive games and activities are used to capture the imagination and encourage skill acquisition and decision-making. The programme will involve a wide range of sports including hockey, rugby, football, netball, athletics and many more.

Rugby Sevens is currently one of the fastest growing global sports. This brand new specialist camp is open to both boys and girls and will be led by ex-Scotland 7's International player and current Uppingham Director of Rugby, Nick de Luca. Nick has represented Scotland 43 times in the 15-a-side game but also represented Scotland on the International 7's circuit, playing around the globe in Hong Kong, Wellington, and LA, culminating in the Commonwealth Games in Australia.  Nick will be assisted by a team of highly qualified coaches, and there will also be an appearance by Josh Basset, two-times winning captain of the Singha Premiership Rugby Sevens tournament Wasps Rugby Sevens team.

Participants will learn the skills needed to excel in this fast-paced game from some of the game’s best players, take part in game analysis sessions and will play games, teaching them good habits for their rugby careers at both sevens and full team levels.

The day will be split into 3 parts. The focus of the morning sessions will be to develop individual skills essential to rugby, improve speed, strength, and agility through current best practice and to evaluate how participants measure compared to current professionals.

After the players have refueled over lunch, we will have a series of educational slots, ranging from, goal setting to game analysis. We will watch some international ties form this year’s International 7's circuit, reviewing matches and seeing the skills learned that morning in practice. Finally, the afternoons will start with an extensive warm-up based around the Bath Injury Prevention Programme. Then it will be spent playing small-sided conditioned games. This allows players to be highly involved and they can get lots of touches of the ball, allowing them to put the skills learned from the earlier sessions into practice.

On leaving the camp the participants will be equipped with the knowledge needed to continue to develop their rugby both physically (skills, conditioning, and nutrition) and mentally (game understanding, rugby’s core values and knowing their own strengths and weaknesses). They will leave inspired by being involved in such an amazing sport, understand the importance of exercise, being part of a team and will have gained the necessary knowledge to be the best the best they can be, in whatever sport they choose.
